Double majoring in Biology and Biochemistry and minoring in Psychology..wise choice for medical school?

I’m a freshman in Stony Brook University, I’m deciding whether to transfer out to a better school, or staying in Stony.

If I stay in stony, i’m thinking of doing a double major in biology and biochemistry with a minor in psychology. I already know the rigors that I’m in for, but what i really want to know is if I should major in biology and biochemistry or just one of the two since they are both so similar. Would medical schools care if I double majored in these two areas or not?

First, I’d stay at Stony Brook. It’s a fine school. A rule of thumb is that transfers always raise a red flag.

Double majors in similar fields do not give an applicant much, if any, advantage. An admission committee is going to want to see an explanation, either in your essay or interview and unless you’re intending to pursue a PhD, your efforts are going to be perceived as an attempt to pad your application. Another red flag.

My opinion is that you should choose a major that sincerely interests you–even a non-science major and simply complete the prereqs. Obtaining high grades, a high score on your MCAT and some excellent volunteer experience should be your priorities.

Those are wise choices for medical school. I would think that medical school would be impressed.
