Double majoring: can I do this?

Throughout high school I was never really sure what I wanted to do later in life. I had been diagnosed with polyarticular juvenile arthritis at the age of 13, which limits my physical abilities and ruled out certain careers. It wasn’t until my senior year that my voice gained a ton of praise and made me think. I had the most solid and deepest bass voice in our choir and, which also worked well in delivering speeches in my other classes. This got me to thinking of possible majors in college.

I’m currently at a community college completing my GE. Next year, I would like to transfer to a University. However,I am not sure what to major in. Communications seems like a great choice with a solid voice and good charisma skills, but I also have a great passion to become a better singer/actor. I’d love to major in either, if not both, music and theater.

Is it possible for me to do that?Communication falls under Letters and Sciences while music/theater (or musical theater) falls under Fine Arts.

Double majoring is quite a daunting task. Few people are prepared for the workload that it brings out. Of course, communications and music/theater are some of the easiest majors around. But just be prepared to take on a lot of homework and micromanage 6-7 classes a semester, 5 if you’re lucky. Pros are you’ll be more versataile when you graduate and it looks good on the resume, and as I said, those two majors are not that challenging as others (like comp sci/sciences/engineering). Cons are that you might not have as much fun as everyone else or free time to take other classes. I tried double majoring, and quit. But of course I tried engineering with another major, and that’s damn near impossible.

You can double major if you want to! You’ll need to work with a school counselor. I had a friend who would alternate her double major by semesters. One semester she’d work on her English classes, and the next semester she’d work on her psychology classes. It will probably take you at least 6 years to complete.

Another option is choosing a minor. Personally, I would make music my minor. Communications is a more practical degree, and you’ll be more likely to find a job after you graduate.

I’m sure that the university wouldn’t prevent you from taking whatever courses you want. They might ask that you declare a major, but it doesn’t mean you can’t take other courses as well outside of your declared major. I actually fell into getting a minor in economics accidentally because I became so interested in the courses…before I knew it I had a minor without declaring anything.

Good luck!
