Does any1 wanna suggest a major for me?

I am attending college now. I have a 4.0. . . sounds great! But the problem is that I can’t decide what to major in. I guess I’m scared to decide to quick. English has always been my best subject. . . I do enjoy it, but I don’t know if I would find it interesting enough to fulfill a career. Does any1 have any suggestions?

English by itself is a great foundation. I got my degree in English but I had nothing else; I thought I would just “be a writer,” ha ha!! I have been doing office work for mediocre pay for 15 years now and it’s killing me inside. Finally I’ve figured out that I actually want to be a nurse. English will help a lot with that because of all the papers I’ll be writing (and, like you, it was my best subject in school) so I don’t regret having it. What else do you like to do? What do you like to read about all the time? When I realized that I was always reading about health-related things a little light went on. Someone else suggested technical writing and editing – that sounds good.

You could try volunteering and see if something clicks for you; it’s a good way to try on a career. Also, there are websites that test your personality traits and aptitudes and then suggest careers.

make a list of things that you enjoy doing…. it can even be hobbies, b/c maybe a hobby of yours would stem into a career! also, what year are you in, because if you are a freshman, you have plenty of time. i think most students choose their majors by the end of sophmore year. and also, a LOT of students change their major, and that is perfectly ok! so i dont think you should decide yet if u dont want to decide quick (unless for some reason you have to decide now).

look into the english major program at your school, and think, would i be excited by these classes, would i be psyched to do the homework, lol just kidding, but seriously, choose a major u are passionate about.

if u still have trouble, go to a career counselor at ur school (i think almost every school has one) and talk to them about it. bringing a list of possible majors and career ideas would probably be helpful. also going to a guidance counselor would probably help.

oh, and congrats on the 4.0 gpa… thats fantastic!

The best part about college is that you dont have to choose a major right away. Dont rush into it, you could pick something half-heartedly and three years later completely hate it. So take your time, put some thought into it, and test the waters. If you enjoy English you could consider:

-creative writing

-journalism

-education

-etc….

Good luck with your future!! Ps – dont be scared to change majors, it could prevent you from getting stuck with a degree you dont want ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m a big fan of english too which is why i’m planning to double major in english and advertising. They complement each other and are 2 things I’m really interested in. I could get a job in advertising and later in life start teaching if I want to. If you want you could double major in english and one of the communication majors like advertising or public relations or journalism etc because they all work really well together. Good Luck ๐Ÿ™‚

If you’re strong in one of the sciences too, why don’t you double major in a science with English, and then do something cool like technical writing and editing? Reasonably lucrative prospects.
