Does a cardiologist perform surgery?

I’m a pre-med student and I’m thinking about going into pediatrics or cardiology. I like children, but the heart interests me as well. I’m just wondering whether a cardiologist perform surgery or could they opt not to. In some articles I’ve read, it says that cardiologists consult with the surgeon and doesn’t actually perform surgery. Lastly, is it possible to specialize pediatrics cardiology?

Wow, it is so specialized to be a pediatrics cardiologist. Ask yourself this: are you ready to work in the field that has to deal with small fragile life? Or put in this way, are you ready to be ever ready to help out the the small fragile life? To perform surgery or not is up to your capabilities, your mission and goal in the medical field. Seem like the medical field is going to have a shiny star. Good Luck in whatever you do.

Pediatric cardio is a specialization and as for the other question you can chose to perform or not to perform surgery as a cardiologist. I have met ones who do and who don’t. I am pre-med too!!! Best of luck!!!
