The Angry Stick Man

Do you think this is a bad teacher?

This is my college computer science class that I am taking.

We are now on our 3rd day of class and the instructor has yet to show up on time.

The instructor could not get the power point to display through the projector so they opted to use the blackboard…( once again this is a computer science class )…something about using the chalkboard in this class seems wrong.

Also the printers are not yet working…….the instructor has assured us that someone is coming to fix it.

1st paper back was graded wrong, when I brought it to her attention she said she must have used the old edition to grade it……….

am I being too picky or is this bad?

Well, as someone who couldn’t use my classroom computer this morning due to a blown transformer, I don’t think the projector and printers were her fault, but there is NO excuse for being late three times and using the wrong book to grade an exam. That suggests that this class is low on her priority list, which is not fair to students who bother to pay tuition and show up.

Tardiness is a pet peeve of mine. The teacher should arrive on time or a little early to set everything up.

I taught college classes myself and I have some experience with ‘a.v.’ as we used to call it. I used projectors and overheads and even those didn’t work all the time, either.

Your teacher is probably not responsible for the projector’s function problems. That’s why the “old backup” is used. Yeah, it seems surrealistic to use a chalkboard when you are in a computer class. But, remember- things break and wear out. Other teachers use the equipment and may not use them properly.

It is probably just as frustrating for the teacher as for you and your classmates.

As for papers being graded, since I don’t know about the assignment, I can’t comment. However, the teacher should be very careful and take every precaution to grade properly. You also have to be vigilant and look over your papers as you get them back. She may be grading a lot of papers – especially if she is a new prof or a grad assistant.

Cut her some slack. If the problems continue, speak to her in private, or speak to the head of the dept (her supervisor). She may reporting the problems already.

Teaching is a tough job, and some professors are under a lot of pressure. If she’s new, even 2nd or 3rd year, she’s probably really nervous and having some trouble getting things going. Cut her a little slack, be attentive, ask relevant questions and give her a little time.

Also, check to make sure your papers are graded correctly! In a few weeks, you’ll know if she’s just a bad teacher or nervous and stressed out.
