So here we have someone out on the street making decisions that can be (and often are) life and death decisions. He/she is required to interpret the law and the constitution and to make reasonable decisions in the best interest of society. He has to diffuse difficult confrontations on a daily basis. On the highway, he has to be able to calculate in his head that a body in motion traveling 1 measured mile in X seconds is traveling Y miles per hour. He has to know (immediately) what will happen if a rental truck with 300 pounds of swimming pool chemicals contacts another truck carrying simple household cleaners for WalMart (wrong decision and people die).

And we have to ask, “does this person need to go to college?” A few weeks (months at most) at the Police Academy is nothing compared to a college education. You can’t usually manage a hotel without a college degree, but we let someone have a gun and make decisions about when to use it without a higher education.

I’m thinking, yes, law enforcement officers need a college education. At least two years if not four. Just my opinion though – if a school teacher, accountant, business manager, nurse, etc… needs a college education then surely law enforcement officers need one too.

Hey,

I’m planning on becoming a police officer after high school. This is my last year of HS. I’ve been searching the net all over the place for a college degree. If you want to become a police officer, usually a college degree is not required however if you have the time to attend college then why not go ahead and give it a try, this will give you an advantage. There are many police officers now a days with only a high school diploma and life experience.

In the end it is up to on whether or not you want to attend college and receive a degree.

I personally am planning on attending college, either I’ll be going to a traditional college or do an online college. Afterwards I plan on joining the RCMP. (My life long dream)

Take Care

Best Regards

Most police departments require a college degree if the individual wants to climb up the ranks rather than be a street patrol officer their whole life. And to achieve executive level positions a graduate degree is usually required.
