I took one year off to save money and move to florida to go to school.

I just started going…. 7 years later.

The disadvantages are that sometimes life happens. If you are not careful, you may become apathetic or not want to go to school. If you are going to take a year off, take a year off after you start school, so then you can gauge how you feel about college after you have been there.

(1) People grow accustomed to not going to school and give up on the idea.

(2) If you find a job in the interim, it becomes increasingly difficult to schedule both work responsibilities and school.

(3) People often lose ambition and settle for less than they had initially aspired to attain.

(4) Life problems get in the way and before you know it, 8-10 years have passed, you’re older, and you’re still not going to school and find yourself stuck in a low paying job.

In Europe, people often take time off to travel around the world or to live in a different country. In the US, however, it can be problematic since most employers don’t seem to grasp that concept of “education.” If you plan to use the time off to travel the world, I think that would be a great experience, something you cannot gain by any other means. However, if you are doing this only because you are tired of school, then I don’t think you are being wise. Go to school and keep up the momentum.

Every person I’ve ever known who said they were going to wait and take a year off never actually go back, and end up regretting it in the long run. College life without a spouse, kids, mortgage, car payment, ft job, all make success in school easier on you.

My advice, consider the summer between graduation of high school and the start of fall your “time off”. Don’t do anything rash like buy a car or get married in that time and hit the books full force in the fall.

Some people take a year off and never return to studies – so watch out. Rather get straight to your studies; there will be plenty of time to party and be free before you take the next step ie marriage.

This is the next step in your growth, would it not make sense to take that gap year with education under your belt, rather than working as a labourer to make ends meet. Which would be more enjoyable?

Just like you’ve probably heard a thousand times…it’s difficult to get yourself to get back into it after a year off. I went to college for 1.5 semesters and was going to take one semester off. That turned into three years! If you do take a year off, I hope you do something amazing :0) Live it up – travel, whatever but make is something memorable!

Tell them straight up that you don’t want to go to college yet like your sister. Tell them that you want a break from all the stress and that you promise you will return to school the following fall.

Well most of the stuff you know you will have to relearn unless you have super power memory. You might also get lazy and wait more than 1 year

unless you retain knowledge…you won’t be fresh with it(subjects you learned) and you may feel out of sync with the whole….school thing
