Commute or off-campus?

I live about 45 minutes to an hour away from the school I want to attend. I don’t know if it would be a better idea to get an apartment near the campus, or to drive back and forth everyday. I really want to get an apartment, but my mom is mad because she says it is a dumb decision. I also don’t feel like driving an hour to and from school everyday. Any input or suggestions on what I should do?

Driving an hour to and from school every day may cause you more stress than it’s worth, depending on if you live in a congested area or not. If money is not an issue, living in an apartment near campus would allow you to spend more of your time studying and enjoying college life than driving all the time. It’s hard to keep friends when you live at home since they’re all at campus in the dorms/apartments in the evenings and on the weekends.

If your mom prefers you live at home, or if saving money is important to you, then living at home is not a bad option. Try to schedule your classes 2-3 times a week so that you don’t have to drive to class every day. Some schools offer schedules that make it easy for students to have all their classes on Tuesday and Thursday, or to have them on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday. This way you can save time, gas money, parking money, etc. Just make some time in your day to have lunch with friends, join clubs, and take part in campus activities. Many commuter students don’t realize how important campus life is until they’re ready to graduate and regret not taking the extra time to hang out with college friends.
