Well I don’t know how to help you get over your “trying to find yourself phase” because for everyone it is different. But I can help you with your college essays. If you find yourself not knowing where to start and having too many thoughts, then first thing you need to do is realize that too many thoughts isn’t possible. Ok maybe it is, but I just mean that having lots of ideas flowing is at least a starting point and much better than having nothing. Ideas and thoughts are good. Don’t sit down to write with the mind frame of trying to write a college essay; since you are having problems with this, you’ll only frustrate yourself and make things worse. Try just writing. Sit down and write (or type) out all your ideas. If you want to start at the beginning of your life and write about it all the way to today, then do that. As ideas pop into your head, write them down. Don’t worry so much about making them flow, or following any set plan, or trying to write an essay, just let your ideas flow and write. Once you are done writing, go back and read what you wrote down. Chances are that you’ll run across a part of your writing that really moves you or would fit wonderfully into an essay. Being able to physically look at your ideas on paper helps you process and organize them. It will help you find that right topic for your college essay.

I hope this helps you with your college essay. And maybe once you get that down (or at least clear out some of those flooding thoughts), you may have a better idea of who you are and where you want to go in life.

Search the Internet for examples of college admissions. Don’t copy anything you see (really bad idea) but use them to get a sense of what works.

There is nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to do. That is why people go to school. You can always write something with the theme “It is not the destination but the journey”
