College admitance?

Is it true that if you have a certain background like Native American that your chances of getting into a college are better? If so, are they a lot better?

The law is that no school can use race as the only factor in college admissions, so you can’t get in if you are Native American but completely unqualified otherwise. However, they can look at it as one of many factors, such as geography, choice of major, age, gender, etc., so you probably do have a slightly better chance of getting in if you are actually Native American (but you need to be able to prove that you are, not just claim it).

Yes. Some schools not all, and schools like Harvard are included, give priority to a select percentage of people. Foreign students, people who come from rural or farm areas, inner city students, the disabled, Native Americans.

They still have to meet the minimal standards for the school in most instances but they don’t end up on the same ranking scale as affluent preppies who went to prep school and were able to pay $2,500 to have a SAT expert put them through a Navy Seals course in the SAT.

It depends on the college. Some colleges (especially state universities) attempt to encourage minorities to enter higher education, so they may be more flexible on certain requirements. I wouldn’t say it’s much better.

The place where minorities have a real advantage (especially Native American) is in scholarships. There are many scholarships specifically earmarked for giving financial aid to minorities.

Sometimes. Colleges try to fill what is called a minority quota. They want some races more than others.
