Choosing a suitable and beneficial major?

I’m going into my senior year of high school and I still have no clue what I’m going to do in the future. I have been thinking about becoming a more humanitarian based doctor. I don’t mind going to med school and doing a long residency but I do not want to major in bio or chem or any typical pre med courses. I was wondering if it would be a wise choice to major in something else…something that would still benefit me, maybe along the lines of international studies? That would help with the humanitarian aspect? I’m really confused and I just want to make the best possible college/career choices but it’s not working out!!! What are you suggestions??

If you want to do anything health related like becoming a doctor or public health expert, you will have to take at least some of the same courses pre-meds do. That means biology and chemistry. No getting around that. Maybe you should look into doing social work, I don’t think you need pre-med for that. If you’re more interested in doing international stuff rather than health stuff, international relations would be an option but focus on a sub-field like international political economy or international development.

Contact some of the med schools you are interested in going to and ask them what they recommend. Med schools are hugely competitive, so I don’t know how far you would get without taking some of the bio/chem courses which would be pre-requisites. If you intend to practice in another country or countries, perhaps international studies would help if you learned the languages. My brother is a shrink; he had to began grad school as a bio/chem major prior to being accepted in med school as he didn’t get in at first. My niece took international studies and graduated in such at NYU; she is now an assistant editor of a magazine.

Good luck!
