Canadian medical school, want to practice in the US?

I’m starting 3rd year of university this fall at McGill (Quebec, Canada), but I’ve started to think about practicing in the united states. But so far I’ve no clue what I would have to do in order to end up practicing in the states. From what I’ve heard degrees from Canadian and US med schools are equivalent… but to practice in the US, would I have to get residency in the States? What else should I do and be aware of?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

All US and Canadian medical schools are accredited by the same authority, so your education in a Canadian school is the same as if you were educated in a US school; however, in order to practice in the US you need to take and pass the US Medical Licensing Exam. All physicians, including US educated, have to take and pass the USMLE.

My advice is to complete all of your education and training in Canada and then emigrate. It’s a lot easier once you’re through than it is to try to be accepted as a “foreign” student.

You can take the USMLE Step 1 exam now, which I would encourage you to do since it tests your knowledge of the basic sciences. If you wait until you are ready to come to the US you may have forgotten too much. You may have to come to a US state to take the exam, but you can read up on that by going to the web site at: http://www.usmle.org/

As to whether you have to be a citizen of the US to practice medicine here, I’m not sure, but I don’t think you do. But to be sure, you need to check with the medical board in the state(s) you are interested in. To find that board you can visit this web site: http://www.fsmb.org/directory_smb.html

McGill has an excellent reputation. I hope you’re knocking their socks off!
