It depends entirely upon which college you get your degree from. Some colleges have a better reputation than others and some actually are horrid.

Almost every state university in the US now offers courses online and many have whole degrees available. Among those with a great reputation and certain programs online are the likes of UMass, Florida State, U Florida, Stanford, Harvard, U Colorado, Southern New Hampshire, et al…..

Those with a degree from one of these schools will have no trouble with degree acceptance. In fact, some research shows that an online degree from some schools is better than a traditional degree from others.

It’s all about the reputation of the school awarding the degree – not about whether it was online or not. Consider who you’d hire if all other things were equal — a Master of Arts graduate from Harvard who did their program almost completely online (but the diploma doesn’t say “online” so you may not even know) or someone who got their Master of Arts traditionally from the small state university near your town. Most folks are going with the Harvard grad.

Understand though – many students have come to the very valid conclusion that online classes are often much harder than traditional classes. You WILL read the textbook and not just nap through lectures. Your assessments will be in the form of papers and not multiple guess tests. A legitimate online program is not the easy way.

Evaluate the source of the degree and attend the very best school that you can.

Stay away from Kaplan, Phoenix and DeVry. There are real colleges with much better reputations that offer all the same programs online for less money – nearly all state universities offer many online programs. The Open University in Britain is essentially an online college, and its graduates are highly sought after by employers because it’s well known that the Open University courses are hard and the students have to do most of the work on their own. None of the online-only schools has developed this kind of reputation in the United States. If and when one of them does, then it will provide a useful qualification for getting jobs. Until that happens, stick with the online programs at established brick-and-mortar schools.

The teaching methods may differ from college to college. Some may offer pre-recorded video lectures while others may have an option of live teaching class. They may also send you hard notes you can study from. But due to continuous technological advancements, teaching methods are becoming more and more interactive.

Of course you can. A degree from a legitimate online college is just as good as a college you actually go to. My husband is getting his associates degree in criminal justice from Kaplan University online. He is on his way to becoming a state trooper, and his online degree is just as good as any other one.
