Most colleges and universities in the U.S. are moving away from requiring a student to provide a social security number. With identity theft rampant in the U.S., schools are trying to take all precautions to prevent someone from stealing another’s identity.

After your application for admission is processed, the school will assign a student ID number to you. This is how you will identify yourself when accessing your records.

Best wishes!

Yes, you can go to a college or university in the US without a social security number. If you remain a non-resident, then you simply pay out-of-state tuition and remain a resident of your home country. If you would like to become a resident of the US, you will eventually be issued a social security number by the government. This takes some time and generally depends on your Visa status (different Visas have different procedures).

Yes. Most schools don’t check the immigration status of applicants who have a US address. Some classes of financial aid will be closed off though, as will pretty much any work on campus.

If immigration status isn’t the issue, it will make things easier for you if you apply for the Social Security number now.

I know i’ve had to use my social security number many many many times… if you don’t have one i think they would want you to prove you’re an american citizen with a birth certificate.
