Can I do this after college ???

I want to be an airline pilot as my career. Is it possible that after going to college (ERAU, Daytona Beach), Can i take 2 years off and do some backpacking and humanitarian work around the world? or is this “gap” in my life going to hurt me when i apply at the regional airlines? Thank You

i wouldn’t think it would harm your application, although the training is incredibly expensive, and you might not be able to afford it after backpacking (over £80000 in the UK)

Oh, my oh my, you are certainly misinformed! Even though you will have a degree in aeronautical science from the Harvard of flight schools (which includes all the way through to a multi-engine rating), you will needs lots of multi hours to even be considered by a regional company. You will also need to keep your ratings current to keep you from getting rusty.

Basically, the only way to get multi-engine time quickly is to go the navy route. The only problem there is you have to go through Officer Candidate School (the hardest 3 months in your life!), then basic and advanced jet training before you are “winged”. Those 3 things will take you about 18 months to 2 years. After you get your wings, you’ll have an 8-year committment flying with a bunch of frat-boy Republicans.

The alternative? CFI, but not in Daytona; those guys only make about $12 an hour.

It’s a tough road. Check out the career section on all the airline websites, and you will get the wake-up call you need.

That is hard to answer. I mean that might be to long of a gap. But also if you are doing things then that will show on your resume and they might see you were still had obligations and give you a job. All places are different. I would call a few airlines and ask.
