Can I become a highschool teacher, engineer and doctor at the same time???

I’m doing my second year biomedical engineering this coming fall. After working with some engineers this summer, I realized that I want a career wherein I can HELP other people. I’ve always wanted to be a doctor so I’m also taking prerequisites for medical school.

But also, since high school, I’ve wanted to teach high school students. It seems like a good career although the salary isn’t as good.

Can I take teachable courses as well as finish my degree in engineering? Has anyone had this trouble before? I am actually thinking of teaching as a part-time career..

Continue taking your engineering courses and pre-med prereqs.

Once you have your M.D., you are a “doctor.” You can teach at community college, university, or high school. You do not need the education courses unless you want to teach grades K-5.

You can always find part-time work at a college, if you still want to teach.

There aren’t enough hours in the day!

Think about it. Teachers are at school from 7ish to 3ish, plus extracurriculars (coaching, mentoring), tutoring, grading, and lesson planning. When would you have a second career?

Doctors have office hours and are on-call for emergencies and hospital rotations. Difficult to have a second career when you’re on-call with your first.

You *could* become a doctor and look into becoming a med school professor and/or researcher. That would keep you close to the field that you love and put you in a position to teach.

Put teaching on hold for now. Once you have some real world job experience, you can get a job teaching night classes or summer courses at a COLLEGE.

Larger schools and state run universities are always looking for part time faculty.
