Biomed vs. Biology?

I am trying to figure out whether to major in biomedical engineering or just regular biology. I plan on going to medical school, so can someone explain the content of these majors and the pros and cons. That would be a great help! Thanks!

I hope you understand how completely different each of this fields is.

Biomedical engineering…. it’s basically engineering… you create and build the medical devices that one day a doctor will be using. Being a biomedical engineer basically means you are a uber engineering. You have to know a LOT about the fields of engineering, from electrical to mechanical to chemical… but you also need to understand all aspects of biology, and how to test for certain diseases/ailments.

To do anything in this field, you need extensive knowledge of engineering and biology, and you need to be extremely creative to come up with new and inventive ways to help doctors by creating the devices they need.

An example of what a biomedical engineer would do is: You know a person has a brain tumor, but the doctor needs a way to know how to see it, and assess it’s size and extent of damage. It comes to biomedical engineer who will create, draft and building a CAT scanning machine for the doctor to use. Granted this has already done, it’s an example of the process. A biomedical engineer is the “go-between” between the doctor and the engineer.

A biology degree will be just that. You will learn science. You will learn how to understand the functions of organisms and how to perform the tests for diseases/ailments that already exist. If you are MORE interested in researching, this would be a good field for you. Biologist research unknowns, to better understand how and why things work.

And example is: a Biologist knows cancers forms when something happens to the cell that pervents it killing itself, and instead allows it to grow and multiply. The biologist will study the mechanisms of cancer growth until he/she find the Deciding factor that allows cancer to multiply.

And that’s it…. From there, the biologist might go to a biomedical engineering, using the information it has discovered on the mechanisms of cancer growth, and ask the to create a device or substance that will supress or stop that growth.

I hope this makes it any clearer to you.

You should do more research, and figure out what you would truely be comfortable in doing.

Usually one opts for biomed After med school. As a clinician one does use a lot of biomed products; but, need not know about making them. Biology is a necessity.
