Becoming a veterinarian? Please read details!?
Okay, so…I’ve been searching for colleges and I would like to become a vet. I heard that I need to get my Vet Tech or Vet Assistance degree first then go to a real veterinary school. I’m guessing Vet Tech and Vet Assistance are the same? Well, I was looking into JU here in Florida and the offer a program called “Pre-Veterinary Medicine”. What is the difference between this and the two others I mentioned? I just don’t get it…
Thanks!!!

If you want to be a vet, you first get a B.A. in pre-vet med., which is usually concentrated in biology, zoology, etc. Then there is vet school, which is very competitive and I think is 4 years.
A vet. tech or vet. asst. is just a short jr. college program that enables you to assist a vet. BIG difference.

My daughter strongly considered this profession, however, she basically doesn’t like school (I think for other reasons). In concurrence with the previous answer above, you need to realize how many years of school this requires. It takes longer to become a vet than a medical doctor…4 yrs college, 4 yrs medical school and 4 yrs vet school! Has anyone mentioned this to you? But if you are independently wealthy, love school, and have a very rich uncle to back you up, go for it! But no, a 2 yr jr college program will not do it. Best wishes to you, there are many animal-related professions. The animals can be less risky to deal with than Corporate America.
