At what point in one’s high school career should they begin applying to college?

I’m currently a junior and I am concerned. I want to make sure I apply at the right time. Should I begin this year after I take the SAT/ACT or should I wait until senior year? Neither of my parents went to college after high school and they have no idea either.

Don’t worry too much at this point about applying. You need to start your search now, but you won’t actually apply to colleges until you have completed your junior year of high school. I worked in admission for four years at a selective liberal arts college, and we loved working with students like you who were on top of the game.

This year, when colleges come to visit your high school, sign up to attend a variety of intsitutions so that you can get a good sense of what is out there and who is offering what. In the spring, start visiting some campuses, and be sure to visit when they are still having classes (visiting in the summer is convenient and all, but you don’t actually get to see the campus as it would be when you are going to be a student there).

Next fall, you will start getting a lot of mail from colleges (viewbooks, applications, etc.). They should all include a timeline for applying. If you are in doubt about when you are supposed to apply and specifically what they are asking you to submit, don’t be afraid to call them.

You are thinking about this process early, which is a good sign. You are going to be fine.

You should apply at the beginning of your senior year. You should think about where you want to apply before you take the SAT, though, because they will give you some free score reports, and they will charge you for additional ones, so it will cost you a little extra money if you don’t pick the right places when you take the SAT.

Well you did have friends and that would had been your siblings. Rather people like to hear it or not social “skills” and all of them can be developed at home. Now the only issues I can see arising with you is that you were most likely not raised under a liberal wing and the majority of students at the new college or university have been so you will have political, moral and ethical differences in views. In my opinion that is not a bad thing. For thousands of years children were raised and home schooled with very little contact with other peers and they seemed to had turned out by far better than what there is now. You are caught up in the media thinking and you will be fine. School is to increase in intellect not your social proprieties. Either way just be yourself and use your manners, use your instict and have a little fun. Join groups, toastmasters from above is an awesome idea and relax.

you should go ahead and start taking the SAT and ACT, but you don’t need to apply for college until your senior year. you can take those tests as many times as you need to b/c the more you take it the higher you usually score.

Start thinking about where you would like to go and start looking for colleges to apply to. Check their website to find out when they are accepting applications for incoming freshmen.

you can’t start applying until your senior. most applications are available around september or october and due (regular decision) somewhere between january and march.

you have some time, don’t worry.
