I have never heard of this. President James A. Garfield was assassinated in 1881 and Vice President Chester Arthur became President. Could you possibly be thinking of that?
P.S. You can post this in Books & Authors, but I’m a librarian and Jeopardy champ, and I have no idea what this is.

That’s an excellent question. I can’t think of any off of the top of my head, but Salmon Rushdie went into hiding for about 15 years after he wrote the Satanic Verses and had a price put on his head by Muslim leaders. He wasn’t ever actually assassinated, but there were attempts made on his life. He works at my University now, and he still has to keep his immediate locations secret.
