as a non-citizen, how can i find a co-signer for a loan in the US?

That’s pretty much all I want to know. I don’t have many influential or affluent friends, as a recent college grad, but i’m already freaking out about graduate school. it’s ok if i end up with 200K in debt after grad school (vet medicine). the problem is – i CAN’T take out any loans without a co-signer.

how do I find one? how do I ask people? it seems like a very delicate matter, so any suggestions, especially from other people’s experience will be MORE than appreciated!

Thanks! 🙂

I hear this question a lot. There are 3 options. First, if you have a friend or relative in the US you can ask them, but your asking a lot, as a co-signor they would be on the line for the loan if you defaulted, and with that kind of money ( a house for most people) is a lot to ask a friend to do. The second is to borrow the money from a bank back in your home country where your family would be able to cosign for you. The third option is to use a gaurantor company (most are insurance companies) Dont confuse this with the garantor used in the federal student loan program, this is different. This company acts as a co signor for you on a private loan. In exchange you pay them a pretty hefty fee for doing so. The source of money to pay the fee can come from anywhere which is why it works with foreign students. Basically, your family from your home country or you yourself apply with them pay the fee and possibly post the collateral. Then the company cosigns the loan for you. if you default on the loan they take what ever the collateral is.
