Applying for university of Toronto, or Waterloo, which one?

Good morning/evening:

I’m 17, going into grade 12, and I have a great interest in computer science. And I would like to go to an Ontario university, mainly u of T, or u of W.

My average grades is 92%, however these marks are due to constant slacking off and laziness, I can get much higher grades if I want to.

My questions are:

1. How hard is it to get into a good university such as U of T, and U of W, what grade average would I need to be accepted, and what is the accept rate for these universities?

2. Which one would be easier to get accepted? (U of W or U of T)

3. Does Advance Placement course help you for getting into these universities? If so, should I take them, and if not, should I just take the normal courses?

4. Does community services helps in getting into these universities?

5. What faculty would I have to apply for computer science?

These are just some of the questions I have as of now, any answers, tips, suggestions, would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

1. Your grades are fine. Stop worrying.

2. Both are excellent schools. I’d guess the rate of acceptance is about the same.

3. It would look good, but it’s not necessary.

4. In Canada, when applying to most undergraduate programs all you need is a high school transcript. What community service you have done plays no role in getting into university. All Ontario high school graduates have done community services as part of their diploma requirement.

5. You would be applying with an intended major of computer science. You apply directly do the program you want. Computer science is part of the science department though.

By the way, it’s much cheaper to go to the University of Waterloo because Toronto has a high cost of living compared to the rest of Ontario.

If you are going into grade 12 in an ontario university, in September or Oct you need to attend the Univesitiy fair that will be held in Toronto. All high schools will be provided with information on it. You will meet reps from all the major universities and you can ask them these questions yourself. I have heard that Waterloo is the place to go for Computer science… they have a co op program which is more intensive but makes for an easier transition for getting into the workforce after you graduate. Once school starts, you also should speak to your school guidance counsellor as they will help you to make sure you take the correct courses, particularly the correct upper level math, to ensure that you have the prerequisites to get in. You should check the websites of Waterloo and U of T under “admissions” to make sure you have taken the correct grade 12 courses this year. Best of luch,

hi Bill – when you say “U of W” – do you mean University of Waterloo? I am assuming you did….

you have really good grades so it will not be very hard at all to get accepted to U of T or UW. Your grade average is fine – as long as you are above 90, you should be fine.

For computer science, I STRONGLY recommend Waterloo, they have the BEST computer science program in all of North America…and yes both universities accept AP courses as long as you got a high grade (like 4 or 5) on the AP exam and a high grade in the course. In either case, you will be given a course schedule to follow for each semester and after transferring your AP credits you can be given the chance to do second-year courses in your first year at university and you can finish a lot sooner.

Community service always looks good, but for Waterloo, I had to write essays. But you don’t HAVE to do community service to get in…if you did some volunteer work when you were younger that will satisfy them.

The faculty is actually called “Faculty of Computer Science” at Waterloo so just apply to that program. If it has changed, don’t worry, just tell them you would like to apply for the Computer Science program and they will put you in the right faculty

good luck with your studies.
