Ancient Egyptians believed the shaped resembled a ray of light coming down from the heavens. Their primary Deity was the sun god Ra. They also believed that the Pharaoh was an incarnation of Ra and that this type of burial would help him to rejoin the heavens so he could continue to act on their behalf to keep the elements of chaos at bay.

Pyramids weren’t built over the dead!!

The pyramids were built, leaving an opening into a passage that went in towards the center. At the end of that passage was the Burial Chamber.

Once the Pharaoh’s body had been preserved, it was put into the chamber (along with all the things the dead person might need ‘on the other side’ of death).

The passage was blocked as those who had placed the body there backed down and out, finally placing the last block over the hole so that no one could tell that the entry place was there.

what i’ve seen from discovery channel is that the dead is “in” the pyramid and not “over”… in the supernatural / spiritual belief of the ancient egyptians, pyramids are “portals” to the netherworld, like a door, and they expect their royal dead to come back to life… logically? i haven’t heard or learn of any…

I think it started out as just a big pile of blocks (or maybe just rocks) on the grave to deter grave robbers. It then (probably slowly) evolved into something more artistic.

Straight lines, regular angles, stuff like that.

It was their quarters, their palace, to live in forever, as most of them were buried with their, slaves, and caretakers, and guards!.

EDIT-They also believed that the shape had special powers, as many people still do!.
