A saber is essentially a blade intended to be wielded by one hand. It is typically light and thin, with the focus on a fencing fighting style.

A sword is a heavier blade that usually needs to be wielded with two hands. It is much more dangerous.

The sabre is one of the three weapons of modern sport fencing, and is alternatively spelt saber in American English. The sabre differs from the other modern fencing swords, the épée and foil, in that it is possible to score with the edge of the blade. For the other two weapons, valid touches are only scored using the point of the blade. Like foil, sabre uses the convention of right-of-way to determine priority. A sword is a bladed weapon, consisting in its most fundamental design of a blade and a handle. The blade is usually of some metal ground to at least one sharp edge and often has a pointed tip for thrusting. The handle, called the hilt, can be made of many materials, but the material most common is wood covered by leather, fish skin or metal wiring. The parts of a sword are remarkably consistent between cultures. The basic intent and physics of swordsmanship is fairly constant.

peep this: difference is that a saber normally only has one sharp edge or slicing side, and can have a hand guard. A sword can have botch sides sharp and has a handle and may or may not have the sides extended out, almost like a cross. Swords also are pretty straight. Sabers can have some pretty serious curvatures from hilt to tip.

When I hear saber, I think of those larger, curved and pointed swords…like the guy Indiana Jones shoots in the market place.

A sword is more for Robin Hood.

A saber is a sword, but a sword is not necessarilly a sabre. Although sabres are used as a category in (say Olympic) fencing, which is at ground-level (on a “Piste”), the weapon was used primarily by cavalrymen striking downward.

a sabre is a type of sword. a sabre is a one handed slashing weapon, as opposed to parry and jab (foils and epees).
