Pre-History is the term used to describe the period BEFORE written history. Written history started around 4000 B.C. So you could say that pre-history is everything before that time period.

Prehistory is the period of human history that took place before the invention of writing.
History is the study of the past through the writings of the past, Archeology is the study of the past through finding objects related to the past, Anthropology is the study of early forms of humans.
So Prehistory would cover everything from the rise of Homo Sapeins to the invention of writing about 6,000 years ago, more or less.

prehistory did not end with the advent of writing. people drew on cave walls and the like, to explain events etc, and to help give meaning to the world around them. prehistory ended when we began to tell stories of the past, i.e. history, it wasnt till the advent of writing when someone outside of the clan could know what had happened. and remember, the word “history” has a root meaning of “his story”, which again, was around a lot longer than the written word

Prehistory is actually everything BC (before Christ).
History start with the birth of Christ in year 1.
It has very little to do with writing. Very few people could write in year 1… much less 5000 years ago. School was not invented until the year 800.

Prehistory is the time before events were written down. Anywhere from 5000 to 10,000 B.C. is accepted. Once events started to be written down, history was being recorded.
