What do you call that big ball of dirt (I don’t know what it is) that rolls by when a place is deserted?

In film and television, a tumbleweed blowing across a scene can be used to indicate a deserted location, or to emphasise an awkward silence.

it is called a tumble weed, they grow and when they die they dry and get sort of hard and yellow and they break off from their roots and then the wind blows them, stereotypically they blow across the desert, this is mainly because there aren’t a whole lot of things for them to get stuck on in the desert compared to residential areas. they get stuck in my hedge all of the time
