We didn’t stress out as much! We didn’t feel the need to let people know we were picking out apples at the grocery store. It was ok if we weren’t home, people could just call back. You didn’t have to worry about your phone ringing at the theater, people were allowed time alone to be disconnected.

Technology, although wonderful, makes the world feel small sometimes. We are all plugged in all the time and we’re always available via cell and email. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to go on vacation and not worry about work piling up in your inbox?

I guess before cell phones no one felt guilty for being unavailable. We saw people face to face and we were available on our time table instead of 24/7. Think about it–just that expression exemplifies the high pressure world we now live in!!

P.S. I’ve got all the gadgets too, but I try to remember what my friends look like and what the world sounds like without my iPod or cell in my ear!

Before the invention of cell phones, mindless chatter was conducted face to face. People were able to muster up the courage to walk from their car to the mall in relative silence. Martin Cooper? I thought Al Gore invented the cell phone!

we had a life and accepted that others did to.

we did not expect to be able to get in touch with everyone we knew at any time, day or night. we also left the house and did what ever we wanted without some idiot interrupting just to see what we were doing.

also if while out, if you really wanted to call someone, believe it or not, there was phones on the side of building and inside stores that for a dime you could make a phone call.

Last summer I left my phone in Michigan and I went a week or so without it. And during that week, I was always bothering my best friend about using her BlackBerry. I think her text messaging bill probably went up $200 that week. She and I were both thankful when I got my own phone back. But, hey, that’s what friends are for, right? 🙂

We didn’t expect to be able to talk to someone on a moment’s notice. If you broke down on the road, you walked to a pay phone to call for help or waited for assistance from a police officer or good samaritan. If you were trapped in traffic you explained what happened when you got where you were going, and possibly they heard about it on the radio traffic report and already knew. We didn’t worry about keeping our phones charged – they were always on and the connection wouldn’t drop when you moved.

Well they sure didn’t walk or drive around with a stupid phone glued to their ears. They made their calls at home or from a pay phone. I figure in a few more years all babies will be born with a phone on one ear. Just natural evolution.

We drove safely. We talked to our friends instead of walking along side of them, talking on our phones. We set dates and kept them.

They waited until Monday to ask their employees dumb-a** questions (Angela says bitterly).
