I’m pretty sure it’s guinea pigs, since they’re not from Guinea and are not pigs, can’t get any more misleading than that. It fits the other clues as well.

I will guess caribou, as they are known in U.S.; except for as they’re known by some kids here, maybe.
Their varieties are many: deer, white-tailed deer, black-tailed deer, fallow deer (I think) and… (as below…)
Native-land name: reindeer. From “up north” of U.S.
The name is misleading because they generally don’t tolerate people, much less people who put bridle and reins on them. Also, they don’t fly! ***SPOILER!***
