University is stressing me so much…Help?

I am currently in my second year at university. I am usually a stressed person with my workload anyway but its getting worse and worse because the work is piling up and getting harder. I am doing an honors degree and my course is about computing. Within the course i have 4 modules and for each module i have coursework. They expect you to find it easy to do each coursework and hand them all in around the same deadline.

I am getting so stressed out and a get moody with all my family which i dont want.

Im not sure whether to consider my options or what?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

First of all, from the perspective of a college prof, we never know what your other professors are giving you, so we really are not all conspiring to make your life awful 🙂 Do your courses have syllabi? If so, make time to do your assignments well ahead of time (since you know when they are due) and space out the work so you are not trying to do a large assignment in one night. Try working in 15 minute intervals, where you take a short break for about 5 minutes to stretch and relax. Set a timer, so that you make yourself take a break. This should help with some of the stress. Also, talk with your professors and ask thier advice, many will be glad to help you figure out how to balance school and family.

Lastly, I encourage all of my students to try meditation or just simple breathing exercises. Breathe slowly in through your nose and out slowly through your mouth. By doing this, you will help de-activate your sympathetic nervous system, which is the cause of all the moodiness.. it is the stress center of the nervous system. Breathing or meditation will slow your heartrate and breathing, will cause positive neurotransmitters to be released in your brain, and will stop adversive stress hormones from making you moody.

Does your university have a counseling center or some similar thing? Perhaps you can talk with them about ways to reduce your stress. Do you exercise? Long walks or runs, a workout in the weight room, treadmill, stationary bike – for many of us such physical activities goes a long way to relieve stress. If you don’t think you have time, try making time to exercise once or twice and see if it helps. I used to go for a run late at night – but only do that if you have a safe place to go.

It’s either consider your options or continue being more and more stressed. Maybe you need to cut back on classes.

I’m second year too. I understand you. I don’t think there is anything we can do, but survive 2 more years.

So, good luck!
