St. Elmo’s Fire is a luminous electric discharge that occurs during heavy storms.
It usually is seen on projecting things such as steeples, aircraft wings, the mastheads of ships, and sometimes around people’s heads or the horns of cattle.
It was named by Mediterranean sailors in honor of their patron saint, St. Elmo, who has been identified with Saint Peter Gonzalez, a well-known member of the Dominicans.
