Name of musical instrument?

I’ve heard that a while ago, some famous guy was asked to write music for a play. I am also told that, after experimenting with his piano, he opened up the lid of it then put in some various objects on top of the strings (objects like pinecones)

This new instrument created weird-sounding music that sounds like a guitar and a piano playing together.

Do you know the name of the guy who invented it, and what he called it?

In my life I’m had at least a dozen instruments that I’ve played very well or played around with and didn’t play so well and the only one that I ever gave a personal name to was the used tenor sax I bought back in the 70s. She was (and still is) Miss Sophie Conn and she’s the only one that I’ve kept all these years. (Not that it’s related in some weird way but it seems like every car or truck I’ve ever owned and driven I’ve given personal names to.) EDIT: When I was married we had a baby grand that both my wife and I simply called ‘Baby.’ That was the piano’s nickname. I’m not sure who first gave it that name but I don’t count this because I never considered that piano a personal instrument. It was bought for her use. EDIT 2: I liked the name Sophie because of Sophie Tucker. Conn is the brand name of the sax. And right now I’m driving Cherokee Kitty, a ferocious female feline of a Jeep with an attitude. I also have an antique VW van named Cliburn.

I’m not surprised that whoever it was was famous: that is very ingeneous; but a temporary innovation like that is unlikely to warrant a new name. After all, wind instruments use mutes and guitars use capos without changing the name of the basic instrument.
