My 5 yr girl just started kindergarden, she attended private pre-school for 2 yrs and is advanced.?

The work she is bringing home I’ve seen is too simple.

Can I talk to the principle about moving her up to 1st grade?

Its really too simple. The only help she needs is with handwriting/related to her age.

Not to step on any toes, but as a teacher I have seen many parents who feel that their child is above average academically. The school year has just began and work will become more challenging. Also, once teachers get to know your daughter, hopefully they will challenge her intellect in the classroom so that she thrives.

If her handwriting is struggling then she needs the fine motor skill training that kindergarten will provide.

Speaking from personal experience, I have a child in my first grade classroom that is reading on a 3rd grade level already, but is not as advanced in other areas as he needs to be in order to move on to another level. Give your daughter’s kindergarten class a chance and express your concerns during conferences. Hopefully her needs will be met and she will be challenged in her advanced areas and learn in her weaker areas.

I believe her work will become more challenging as the year goes by. So, just relax and go with it for now. If you want her to learn more advance things, that is okay. You, her father or a grandparent can lead that challenge. It might be a good time to introduce music as in piano or voice lessons if she is gifted that way. Or try to get her doing art projects or sports, whatever her interests are. I also had an advanced child and after he was around 11, he learned things on his own like computer, guns, locksmithing . Then as an adult he built his own house from what he learned on a computer program. So, there are all sorts of ways to enrich her life besides sending her to the next grade. Also be asured that if she is truly gifted, her teachers will notice and talk to you about it.

Honestly, I doubt they would move her up. As it is still early in the year (assuming you are not on year round school) and that she has just started, the work they are doing right now is almost more of an evaluation of all the children’s skills. Finding out where they are at so the teacher can suit their needs. Wait a few months before persuing this. She will learn things in kindergarten that serve as a foundation for her in first grade. In my opinion, I’d reconsider. However, maybe a parent/teacher conference would help? Discuss with her teacher what her game plan is for the year, see what she foresees for your daughter.

She may be taken out of the room for a reading and/or math group. That’s the way they do things at our school. Ask the teacher for a conference and she can explain things to you.

How about give her a chance to be a kid and develop socially.

That’s what kindergarten is for, not to work on their calligraphy.
