I think the term started out with the pony express. It means riding flat out. Pony Express riders not only had to deal with outlaws but Indians bent on taking their scalps.

Cowboys also used the term, often they had to ride ahead of stampeding herds of cattle to try and stop them. One slip up and you got trampled.

Ride like your life depends in it… and in many cases it did.
