logic question?

heres a logic question.

i need help please.

newton middle school has a hall with 500 lockers, all of which are closed. five hundred students start down the hall. the first student opens every locker. the second student closes all the lockers that are multiples of 2. the third student changes (closes an open locker or opens a closed one) all multiples of 3. the forth student changes all multiples of 4. and so on. after all students have finished how many lockers will be open.

please explain how to solve it too.

All of the answers that gave an answer or a clue (except JM) are wrong.

Do what Jm said, kind of. This layout is much easier:

Write what happens to locker 1

Write what happens to locker 2

Write what happens to locker 3

. . .

A pattern develops rapidly.

Try creating a chart of the first 50 or 60 lockers. Go through the steps in the problem and look for patterns in the answers.

Answer is 1. because one is not multiple of either 2 or 3. The first student had already opened it but nobody closes it. not the second, third …..until 500th.

OMG I did this just last year. I don’t remember exactly how we solved it but the answer had something to do with prime numbers. You have to take each number and find the prime numbers.

I know I didn’t help much, sorry. Are you in the sixth grade?

i’m doing this same question in my math class. you wouldn’t happen to go to hamilton high school would you? anyways, the answer is 350 open, 150 are closed. my friend gave me the answer. i don’t know how to solve it. sorry!
