“Ophthalmology” is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual pathways, including the eye (as well as the brain and areas surrounding the eye).

I agree with the prior post that, among other things, Da Vinci is an artist. He was also a visionary and inventor and is credited with coming up with the idea for contact lenses in his 1508 work “Codex of the Eye, Manual D.” In this manual, Da Vinci described a method of altering the power of the cornea (a part of the eye critical to vision), by submerging the eye in a bowl of water. He did not, however, actually suggest this idea be used for correcting vision. So it’s probably a stretch to call him an “opthalmologist,” although he helped that branch of science along.
