I love you too!

How can one study a longer boring course with more focus?

For my work I am currently doing an additional course in a subject I already know about as such, but I need a nationally accreditation to use it at work. So I mainly study after work, but I find it so boring and time consuming that I tend to drift away easily. I ask what students all ages do to keep themselves focused even if the content is boring.

Thanks a lot.

I somewhat agree with the answer about attitude, but suggest you take it from a slightly different angle.

You indicate that you already know the subject, but must have a formal course in it to use it at work. Is it possible that you resent having to take the course? Sometimes this happens and your mind starts automatically focusing on the things in the book/lecture that you already know and ignors anything new.

When you read the book, do you find yourself thinking, “Well, I already knew that!….And that’s really basic stuff… this is a waste of my time. I’m not going to learn anything new in this course.” Translation: it’s boring because I already know it all.

IF this is what is happening to you, you have basically two choices.

1. Do the minimum required to get the “C” and then give your grade card to your employer so you can say, “Here, I took the course you said I had to have, now I want the job.” I’ve seen that happen a lot. Frankly, the employer is rarely impressed with a “C” when you’ve probably already let them know you can do the work without the class.

2. Re-think the whole situation. “Okay, so I’ve learned how to do this on my own (or at a previous job, etc). I learned it informally and learned all the practical, usefull ways of doing it. But maybe there is some background, some details, some rationale, etc, that I don’t know. Maybe when I read something I already know, I can use that as validation that I’m doing things correctly. Then I can focus on finding the NEW or different information that is there—surely I don’t know EVERYTHING there is to know about this subject. How would I apply this on the job?”

Years ago, after spending 10 years in a field, I was asked to teach a Fundamentals course in it. I though sure, no big deal. What I found was, that by going BACK to teach the fundamentals, I learned alot that I had previously “skimmed over”. It made me a much better professional. Even if this is a Fundamentals course for you, I’m sure there’s stuff in it that can make you better at the job—if you allow yourself the opportunity to validate and set the stuff you already know and then dig into the details. You’ll end up not just “knowing about it” , but becoming a real expert.

Believe me,you’ll be far better off by finishing the class with an “A”, and then going to the boss with: “Ya know, I hate to admit this. But I think I could have done this job without the course, but now that I’ve taken it, I really learned alot and now I can really do a great job for you.”

It’s your choice. Do you want to resent the course or re-invent how you look at it? The very fact that you even bothered to ask how you can do better in the course leads me to believe you care about it and would do well with Option 2.

Good luck–and yes, attitude is everything.

It is your attitude towards education

+ve or -ve

There are no boring courses. if any why should you take it and why should it be taught?

Look +ly, You have to get Knowedge, learn which you dont have.

If one is there with right attitude for learning You are short of time, and every teacher is Farista for you!
