I would suppose that since a lot of the American Revolution took place in New England and New York, that’s how they came up with the name Patriots. And the Eagles, well, maybe because the Continental Congress met in Philly and that’s where they decided the national bird would be the bald eagle.

Don’t know for sure, but it makes sense to me!

That’s a good question and I surfed around the Internet without any luck – (but I am an Internet amateur) – but the general consensus of the footfall fans in the room is,

NE Pats are a Boston based team, home of the American revolution and the Boston Tea Party. So Patriots is good fit.

Philly Eagles, home of the Liberty Bell and Declaration of Independence. The Eagle is the symbol of American freedom.
