can she do this?

my cousin was telling me that he daughter’s teacher sent a letter to the parents saying that they are only allowed to send “healthy” snacks and lunches to school and that any junk food will be taken away and thrown out (ie- cupcakes, crackers, etc), she sent a list of foods that are and are not acceptable in her classroom. The list of foods that are banned include:

Peanut Butter (including peanut butter crackers)

chips

cookies

yogurt (including fruit yougurt)

soda

milk

chocolate

cupcakes

twinkies

the list of foods she wants in the class includes:

appels

oranges

bannana’s

tow fou

I am shocked and appaled that the parent’s arent’ fighting this…

Can she legally do this? can she really tell parents what their kids are and are not allowed to eat?

I am not sure if it is legal in the state you are from or not, but in Tennessee they have passed legislation that governs the type of food your child can consume while at school. Here they are not allowed to bring any kind of candy or chips, no sodas..not even sports drinks such as Gatorade. I think it is rediculous. I thought sports drinks were supposed to be good for them after playing outside and in P.E. They are definitely enforcing it in our state. The students couldn’t even bring candy to their Halloween party..How crazy is that!?

It may be that the school has started a “healthy eating” policy. Many schools in our area do that. I understand the peanut butter because many kids are allergic, and many schools ask parents to not send anything with peanut butter. I don’t know about the legalities of it, but schools can have a say about what is brought into the building.

Yes, she can. And really, what’s the harm? So many children are overweight now, and teachers are just trying to get their students to eat healthier at school, so if they are eating junk at home they are at least getting some nutrition at school. It is the same thing as banning peanut products at school, when the child enters the school they have to follow the rules set up by that school. We follow healthy eating guidelines in my school, and have seen an improvement in children’s health because of it. I’d stop worrying so much about what’s legal and be concerned more with what’s healthy.

Yes, actually, they can.

When a child goes to school, they are under the school’s jurisdiction. This means that they must follow the school’s code of conduct. It is much the same as banning alcohol and drugs.

The parents should have read the school’s rules before they sent her there if they don’t like it.

well the teacher doesnt have to allow any food in the classroom at all and im sure that it is being done for a couple reasons…probaly one is they are easier to clean up and dont make a big mess and also its proabaly that she dont want a classroom of kids hoped up on sugar…in my kids’ school it is up to the teacher themselves if they want to allow the kids to have snacks more than likely it is the same for yours also too kids trade alot of the time and lots of kids have food allergies and it is alot safer to stick with fruit

I’d like to say that I know it’s illegal, but I’m not sure.

I can’t believe that she doesn’t think milk and peanut butter healthy.

I’ll be looking to see what answers you get.

For future reference it is tofu, not tow fou

hi PrideBoi.

It shouldn’t be ok, I guess the parents should fight it if theyre unhappy with it…on one hand, something needs to be done because obesity in this country is crazy, but can’t we worry about why our children can’t spell or speak proper English instead? Did the principal get a head’s up on this?
