Would you give up a $1M job to become a teacher?

Sounds crazy but this is what I’m actually contemplating. I have a very boring but easy job that over the next few years will bring in $1M per year easily. Yet the boredom is driving me crazy and I have a lot of $ saved so I am thinking of teaching H.S. History or business classes.

sacraficing a work-life’s excitement for a yearly salary of 1 million bucks is exactly what i’d do.

sacraficing my life for the same salary is something i couldn’t do.

as long as my boring job isnt my life, i would never give up 1 million bucks to do something more enjoyable; unless, of course, it paid more.

Jut wondering….what is it you do that is easy and brings in that kind of money? I might try to get that kind of job!

I would never teach high school, certainly not after giving up a lucrative job. There are too many kids who do not want to be there. If i would teach at all, I would teach at the college level. The students are more motivated to learn.

I didn’t give up a million, but I did give up some dough. Best thing I have ever done. I have never felt more appreciated by kids or some parents and felt like I am making a difference. Yes, you still run into some of the same idiots you find in the business world, but that can be changed, or you already know how to cope.

Good Luck with this decision.

I cant answer that question.

I can tell you that I have had other offers… (no where near that salary or even a tenth of it…) and love this career too much to do anything else. You get:

Satisfaction daily.

frustration daily.

consternation daily.

long term of those three items as well.

I have had student come back:

just to visit

just to keep me informed of their college choices

just to thank me for something I did 4 years ago, that honestly I didn’t know I did.

You will make a difference in a young persons life guaranteed.

ready to give a little back? (cause you will be giving alot!)

I love teaching, so I don’t think your question is crazy at all. You certainly won’t be bored in a classroom. Try middle school – never a dull moment. High school, too. You will probably have to make adjustments in your lifestyle, though. I would suggest getting your credential before you tell your boss good bye.

You can easily live off the interest if you’re really pulling in that kind of money. If you’re bored, go for teaching. Could you get back into the money-making field if teaching doesn’t pan out? If so, go for it.

I wish I had that sort of a dilemma. 🙂

It’s not so crazy sounding based on the fact that you will not need to be concerned with income. It makes sense as your one need is met, that you would go out to meet another need. I wish I could switch with you….been working as a case manager/Instructor in Human Services and can barely pay the bills.

No way ! I’d find another way to help the youths like the scouts or something .You know , teaching pays so little you can end up on food stamps !

Do it if you have some cash saved. Teaching certainly may be interesting but lucrative it aint! If it all went pear shaped would you be able to go back to your present job?
