As a speaker of 7 languages & a degree in linguistics, I’d like to say that English is no more, no less difficult than any other language. Every language contains slang, culturally driven idioms and sayings which cannot be translated literally, quirky grammar. However, English does have some specific challenges mostly due to Britain’s colonization around the world. From the colonized countries, many words and expressions have been assimilated into English and therefore do not follow the spelling or grammatical rules. This is happening currently in reverse in many languages like Japanese, Korean….which have borrowed heavily from English and are being assimilated into their own languages. Having said all this, learning any language is challenging but there are no miracles, no shortcuts other than good old fashioned practice, practice, practice. Everyone is looking for the magic bullet but it takes an average of 3.5 – 5 yrs to learn a language fluently and a little longer if the target language has a different alphabet and writing system. ie. going from a latin alphabet to a symbol based one like Japanese, Korean or Chinese, or Arabic – a directional difference like Arabic, writing from right to left or up and down….these all take longer because the brain has to reprogram itself. The key to learning a language is to not expect perfection but to expect successful communication. There is no other purpose to learning a language except communication.

There is so much slang and people do not require others to speak properly.

English in public schools become more and more watered down every year when the schools fail in their standardized testing, the only way to make the school not look so bad is to lower the goal/standards.

Public school is nothing more than bookwork, no plays, schemes, skits, field trips, nothing fun anymore. Who wants to sit and write parts of speech, punctuation and so-on everyday? Learning must be fun or the child will only learn it long enough to pass a test, not stick with them for life!

everyone is too lazy to learn proper grammer. You wld prfr to txt ur frnds instead of sitting down and drafting a proper letter. No one wants to read the crap that young people write anymore – it’s a sign of laziness, hard to read and shows no enthusiasm for your own language. No wonder other countries will be ruling over us in 50 years.

English is a language with a lot of ‘rules’ and even more exceptions to those. It’s also made up of bits and bobs of lots of languages.
