This sounds like one of those interview questions designed to confuse and trap you. What prereading strategies will be used? What prior knowledge needs to be activated? And have the students even been taught how to be critical? The question makes more sense if you eliminate the “Why”. Then you can answer yes or no.

The assumption is that prereading strategies WILL activate prior knowledge (which no one is sure even exists in all the students) and WILL raise interest in the subject matter (if any interest existed in the first place).

any time the brain can make connections between known and unknown then learning occurs and retention and transfer can occur at a successful rate

the new knowledge(new text) is stored in the brain by how it is similar to known knowledge(prior experience with similar text format, characters, themes, locations, authors…) and retrieved by how it is different
