Kids who really want good grades should consider giving their teachers Apple computers or iPods. If that’s not possible, however, fruit remains a tasty option. Apples have a long history of greasing the wheels of education. Take notes — here’s how the classroom corruption began…

According to aboutapple.com, the juicy fruit is a traditional present for teachers in the United States, Denmark, and Sweden. Some think the practice originated as a simple gift of food for poorly paid teachers. Others believe the good health associated with apples made the present particularly meaningful. And a few even think it’s a nice name for a child.

Giving an apple to a teacher is also the origin for the term “apple-polisher,” which was first recorded in the late 1920s. Apple-polishers, also referred to as bootlickers or toadies (among other, even worse nicknames), aren’t always favorably looked upon by other students. I suggest hanging onto the fruit, and using it to keep certain health professionals at bay.

Way back when America was mostly rural, small communities could not afford to pay teachers a lot, so often they gave them a place to live, wood for heat, and extra produce, such as apples ( a farming staple in most of the colonies) carrots, corn etc. so they could eat. A hungry teacher would not be particulary nice, so students might hand them a “snack” such as an apple for their lunch etc.

Apples are good for your health. Some sick individual find them also easy to conceal a razor blade.
