disc=circle

disk=hard drive

I’m going to throw a compact disc at my computers hard disk, maybe it will land in the CD drive.

I use “disk,” but I just typed “disc” in here to test Firefox’s spell check and the validity of the word. It is not underlined in red, so both are correct.

“Disk” and “Disc” are precisely lexicographically equivalent. The difference is in usage. “Compact Disc” is correct… and yet it is also correct to call a CD a “disk.”

Just remember the word “Disc” by itself looks weird to more people, so whenever in doubt, use the word “Disk.”

“Compact disc” is spelled with a “C” because that’s how its inventors decided it should be rendered; but a computer hard disk is spelled with a “K” In modern technological contexts, “disks” usually reproduce data magnetically, while “discs” (CD-ROMs, DVDs, etc.) reproduce it “optically,” with lasers.
