What should I do on first day of school? How do I let staff recognize me right away as a good student?

I will be joining an IB school in Denmark. People come from this country or outside it. I want to stand out from everyone else and appear like a good student. I also would like to introduce myself to a lot of teachers and students as much as possible. How do I start? Should I just say “Hello I believe we’re in the same class!” ask questions about the person? I am not good at starting a conversation.

9.00 assembly hall to meet principal

9.30 walk with classmates, teachers, tutors to class. handed out info. then opportunity to ask questions. (should I write down a list?)

1.30 assembly hall for a traditional dance… uhhh what should i do from there? just dance? lol

3.05 end of school.

Take it easy. teachers as well as students all have a lot to focus on on the first day. Dont overwhelm yourself. i know the first day anywhere new is a great chance to start over and make a great first impression. But pace yourself. you have a whole year to stand out. Dont rush it all on the first day. Its hectic enough. I think that introducing yourself is a great idea for day one. Then after that comes day two, try re-introducing yourself, say hello to the people you met and call them by name. small talk is good. “so how did you like your first day?”ect. Set little goals for yourself the first couple of weeks. Always have your work in and on time. Stand out to your teachers that way. And remeber students names and stand out to class mates that way. You wont become class president the first day. lol so just take your time do your work and have fun. You said you “want to stand out and appear like a good student.” just be yourself and be a good student. dont “appear” to be anything, just BE it…Good luck and take your time to enjoy and learn

e.kess gave you some good advice!!

The only thing I would add is to sit down front during class so the instructor can see you. I have found this makes the biggest difference.

That of course means you need to show up for every class and be on time.

Finally, as to making them think you are a “good student” (whatever that means) vs. be a good student. Read the textbook chapters BEFORE the lectures. That way you understand the lectures and can ask intelligent questions. Teachers can tell if you have read or not by the questions you ask.

one of my teachers always liked it when a student said hi to him or thanks when he was holding the door open. So like if a teacher walks past you in the hallway, you might wanna give them a small smile and if someone is holding the door open make sure to say thanks.

the best way to appear as a good student is not to sit with someone who looks like trouble and not to be in back. Be in the first few rows. Look at the speakers’ eyes, listen to what they’re saying even if its boring at least look like you’re paying attention.

when you walk with your classmates, unless its something where you should be quiet, try to talk to someone. Just lightly, small talk.

you may want to talk a small notebook with you if you’re gonna take a bag or something.

most likely if theres a part where you can ask questions, then no one will (cause everyone is going to be nervous and won’t) so you might want to ask a question and stand out. Just make sure its not a question that’ll take more then a minute or so to answer. otherwise everyone will remember you as the girl who asked annoyingly pointless questions.

Then for the dance, just as long as you talk to one guy before hand then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Him or another guy might ask you to dance and if they don’t then its one less thing you have to worry about.

thats about all i can think of, during the first day usually most people are afraid and nervous so try to appear calm. Don’t wear tight clothing, pick clothes that are decent at least. Yup, thats all i can think of, good luck.

E Kess did give you some good advice. I appreciate your enthusiasm but please don’t overwhelm yourself with this! Enjoy everything–it wont last long before you have to put your nose to the grind stone. I can only add–don’t be a fake. Be yourself, talk to people sitting next to you when you get a chance…BUT NOT while someone is speaking. The suggestion about reading the chapter ahead of time is excellent! I did this in college and my professors REALLY appreciated it because I was the only one who would answer or ask decent questions–teachers love it when their students participate in a meaningful way. Your consistent work and attitude will shine through and they will know you, and like you.

All you need to do is be yourself. It’s your first day so you must observe first the environment. You don’t have to think something to ask just to start a conversation. You can introduce yourself to the person beside you or proper to say hi or hello first. The first day must be exciting and not a problem. If you know something share it. Just be yourself and have confidence, ok. goodluck!

If you act like that no-one is going to like you.

(as you can tell by the person calling you a brown noser, and everyone else advising you to not be as full on)

Just chill and go with the flow depending on what happens on the day. Really, the only way they can tell is by your work.

I don’t even know why you bothered asking a question like this.

Just do your best, try to be friendly and stay out of trouble! If you’re not very good at starting conversations, chances are someone will start one with you.

Good luck in your new school! &hearts

P.S. Traditional dance???

Don’t say anything to anyone unless it’s inbetween blocks. Answer questions and do your work and you’ll get by.
