Firing a Teacher?

A music teacher was recently fired at my school, and many of the students liked him, including me. He was a great teacher too. You guys might know about Butterscotch, the young girl who was recently on America’s Got Talent, and made it to the finals of the series. This music teacher taught her, and helped her refine her skill. Now he was fired, and the only excuse that the Administrators of the school will give is that they want to convert the school to completely classical music. This school is supposed to be about refining Talents and showing individuality. I think that they are eliminating that by trying to make the music department conform to a certain standard. I am one of many students who are demanding that the school rehire this teacher. They give any students who say anything about wanting this teacher back a demerit, or a disciplinary mark. You can even get kicked out of the school for saying something, because it is not a public school. How do we get our teacher back?

First and foremost , I commend you on your impeccable use of grammar, syntax, orthography and lexicon! It is a nice change of pace to the usual posts on YA.

You should definitely take this to whatever level you see fit to make sure your first amendment rights are not trampled! Read over the school’s guidelines and if necessary take them to an attorney for an assessment. It is also important to include some teachers in your endeavor. One should not compromise the integrity of well fundamental values and standards. Defend yourselves and your firm beliefs. Stop being mere ‘sheeple’ and use the education you’re receiving for the development of free and critical thinking!

I would get the student body together, and you could go to the administration, or the school board if you have one. or you could go more extreme and do a walk out.

I would find out why the teacher was fired. Maybe there is more to the story than y’all understand. Second after you know the whole story then I would fight for the teacher if you still want them to be at your school.

The school can’t dock you points because you are speaking your mind, public or private. Let them know you are not going to stand for that either. Just because you are students, doesn’t mean you are going to allow them to bully you into doing what they say.

Let the administrators know the reasons why you liked the teacher, what you learned, how he changed your life, or stretched you to be a better musician. that will help then just saying “bring him back”

Because this is not a public school you do not have much to say about any teacher that is hired by this private school unfortunately. You could appeal to the School board itself that governs this school – but again, you do not have much to stand on. A private school prides themselves in the fact that they can retain and hire whomever they please. The parents could be a force here – get them together and see if they can do something.

The most you could do at this point is let administration know how much you liked this teacher and how much he influenced students – and if nothing else, make sure you let this teacher know how much of an influence he has had on you and others. I am sure if this teacher has gone to another school, they are the lucky ones – you could transfer to the school that he is at if it means that much to you. Or your parents who are footing the bill for your education.

It’s a tough call. Do let the music teacher know that he has helped you in your education. That is music to a teacher’s ears…

First of all, the school doesn’t have to (nor, should they) tell you why the teacher was fired. They have an obligation to protect the teacher’s privacy. I’m sure that since you are so fond of this teacher, you can respect that. As for getting him back, I’m afraid it’s probably hopeless. You can enlist the aide of your parents, and your friends’ parents, but the teacher might not want to come back since he has already been dismissed. He’d probably feel like he’s walking on egg shells if he did. If you know how to get in touch with this teacher, maybe you could approach him regarding private lessons.

The school can do what they want with their personnel and curriculum decisions. There’s no way to get the teacher back, and the only way the school will get the message is to have students and parents talk to administration. In this case it sounds like it would better for the parents to do this since the students get disciplined for it.

There may be a reason that you are not being told, for your protection. Let your parents get involved in the issue, and maybe you will get answers.
