Polymorphonuclear leukocyte: A type of white blood cell, usually most visable when stained with neutral dyes, having a nucleus that is so deeply lobated or divided that the cell appears to have multiple nuclei. Actually, the single nucleus is divided into lobes connected by strands of chromatin.

Also called multinuclear leukocyte

Informally called a poly.

Polymorphonucleocytes are cells that have many lobed nuclei……leukocytes are white blood cells ……plymorphonuclearleukocytes are mature white blood cells that form an important part of our immune system. They are the first defense system against invading bacteria and viruses. They are phagocytes i.e. they ingest the invading bacteria. Puss is the end product of these dead cells when the infection is localized.
