i was just talking about this the other day with my boyfriend! the best thing my teacher did for me was in seventh grade, mr buckholdt came in as a student teacher in the one class that i did horrible in. on the day of our final he pulled me aside told me to just relax that no matter how i did he was still very proud of me for making leaps and bounds in the class since he took over. i finished my final with only one minute left in class and he told me to come back in before i left for the day and we would check it together. i ended up passing with flying colors and all it took was for someone to believe in me.

Haha! Me too MKC, but he wasn’t my teacher, though I do learn things from him. My parents were also teachers so I could give them a lot of credit as well.

But as for teachers I had go, I would easily say two things. In elementary school I had a couple of teachers that made learning fun, exciting, some where you wanted to be. In high school I had one (yes just one) who made me question things. Not to get his own point across, but often sometimes to allow me to prove why my point was right. I had several college professors who gave it to us straight. They basically said “This is what the University says I should teach you, so I will teach you it, but I have done this in the real world and here how it really is.”

Wow, that’s tough. I had some teachers that shouldn’t have been near kids at all, but I also had some really incredible ones.

I would have to pick my AP Lit teacher, junior and senior year. He really made it a point to get to know each of his students well (there were only 8 of us in the class), and to challenge us each on our level. Once a month, he would take us on a Friday night field trip to see a play, opera, or ballet in a nearby city; he would take us to the university library on weekends and help us find really great works; and when my parents got divorced and I had to move to another school district (senior summer), he drove over with some of my friends and took us to lunch and a movie.

I also remember that he respected our viewpoints, whatever they were, as long as we could back them up. He and I were diametrically opposed on many points (theology, worldview, etc.), but he never once told me I was wrong – and he only had to tell me once or twice that my argument had holes. He challenged me to dig deeper, to not accept what was on the surface just because it was easy to see.

Gotta say thanks for that, Mr. J!

Absolutely nothing. Most did what they were supposed to do most of the time. Some didn’t. Only those people who were once or consistently teachers pets pose questions like this one. It’s time you brown-nosers know that the other students in the class were treated like second-class citizens while you were up there kissing the teachers butt. I have no more affection or kind memories for any teacher I ever had than I do for the sullen guy who works at the convenience store.

My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Strawn, taught me that I was smart. Previously, I had been in Catholic schools where the nuns mistakenly assessed my shyness as being retarded.

What a revelation it was to me to have someone recognize my talents!!
