Reading, reading reading, and memorization. Drills, drills and more drills. It is an unfortunate fact that English has so many exceptions that there are very few useful rules. But if you can encourage your students to do crossword puzzles, unscrambling scrambled words, playing scrabble, etc – in other words, manipulating words as much as possible- some of it will stick. Good luck — it’s a problem English teachers have struggled with for years, and the current fad of text-talk isn’t helping matters at all!

It only comes with time and reading and writing, when I was in school I was a horrid speller now MANY years later I write text books and manuals and my spelling has improved BUT sometimes it still falls short. BTW I did use the spell checker

Step 1: Take the desired dictionary. Preferably Oxford.
Step 2: Put it under or inside your pillow.
Step 3: Rest your head on the pillow and close your eyes for several hours.
Repeat until desired result.
