Get a part time job… Department store, waitress, write resumes, tutor, etc…

hmmmmm well here we go. Make lots and lots of contacts and seasonal work is the best because of the ealier mentioned issue of teachers having to quit to teach. Best ones I have done involved summer camps for middle and high school kids at the university. Life Guarding works well if you don’t mind the sun, bartending at the local water part is very popular but I believe our social studies department has that one covered. District teams I am currently working with the district designing a new math course that is fun. For retail go somewhere you frequent where they know you because they will recognize your passion and use you seasonally if they can like Lowes loved me but company policy prevented them from using me seasonally if I did not work hours in a pay period they had to terminate me and well I burned out after 6 months of double timing. But a lot of places need help in the summer and holiday season and see teachers as reliable easy to train people. Universities have summer programs they need people for and community colleges always need people for summer sessions depending on your degree.

My choices would be to write training publications or articles for professional journals and education magazines, newsletters and websites. There is always a need for well written information. The other option to write regular articles for on-line publications such as www.associatedcontent.com or www.helium.com, both pay for articles.

Depending on your specialty, you could consider tutoring instead of teaching during the summer.

Naturally, if you’re not looking to make money – there are hundreds of volunteer opportunities in every community.

I worked as a waitress in college, so when I needed to earn $ over the summer, I waitressed again. I had the concern of quitting at the end of summer but I told them if it works out, I may consider working 1-2 shifts a week during the school year. It didn’t work out (surprise, surprise) but it left the door open for their willingness to train me. I guess I realized the work involved for the extra $ during the school year was not a good trade for me 🙂

I just finished my first year of teaching, and I’m having a problem finding a retail job for extra cash. When I have to say that my “current employer” is a school district, they automatically assume that I’ll quit when the school year starts and they don’t want to waste the time to train me.

The obvious thing is to find a seasonal job. You could work in a camp as a counselor or in a specialty position such as crafts or water safety. You could also check with a temp agency. Many companies need temporary replacements for people on vacation. I’m spending the summer preparing lessons for the fall. Good luck.

As a teacher, I was always looking for ways to make $ during the summer. I decided that having a website was a nice, constant stream of traffic. It has turned out to be a life-saver during the summer.

I work for a company called Mad Science – may be one in your area. Awesome fun science stuff for camps and birthday parties. Summer camps are a good choice – usually run through local church organizations and the YMCA. Tutoring is another good option.
