I taught 4th grade for seven years. I loved teaching my students and seeing them learn while they were having fun. I loved planning creative lessons, and watching how my students would change, grow, and accomplish so much in a year. If I could have been left alone with my students it would have been great!

That brings me to my dislikes. There is a ton of paperwork, meetings, and other jobs that must get done and given to the administration. With most states having standardized testing there is always some kind of paperwork that needs to be completed that takes time away from your class. There’s a lot of red tape to get the least littlest thing accomplished, and there is a lot of pressure to “teach to the test” so test scores improve or remain high. Unless you want to become an administrator there is little room for career advancement, and the pay is low compared to other jobs that you can get with a college degree. And last, but not least, with parents wanting their children to always be the best you will always have at least one parent who is a royal pain, because their child isn’t perfect.

With that being said, I left teaching to start a family, not because I didn’t like my job. You just have to love what you’re doing and not expect a lot of rewards beyond knowing that you are helping your students and you’re an integral part of their lives.

I’ve taught many elementary grades. I loved being with the kids and watching them learn and being a part of that. You really bond with a class that you’ve had for an entire school year. It’s a rewarding profession. The schedule is nice too, especially if you have kids in school too. But believe me teachers deserve all the time off they get. I didn’t like dealing with psycho parents or disruptive students. The paperwork can be overwhelming too. I’m not teaching right now because I’m raising my daugher but I do look forward to going back to it someday.

I like being with students. They keep me young, make me laugh and we learn at the same time. I like seeing a student achieve and hearing about what they are doing after graduation. I like that each day is different. I enjoy my subject areas (high school business) and I hope it shows.

I dislike the paperwork, the meetings and other teachers who try to be buddies with the kids. They make it tough on other teachers who try to do what’s right for the kids.

Teaching elementary takes stamina and lots of energy. Teaching high school can be stressful. Each level has its own pros and cons.

What I love: every day is different. The kids can be amazing. I love the curriculum ( I teach elementary). You form bonds with students and fellow teachers. Some of my best friends are other teachers I have met at my schools.

What I hate: There certainly seems to always be political clashes between teachers and administrators. The head honchos seem to forget what it is like to be in our shoes (and most of them were at one time).

I will be starting my 26th year teaching special ed. I am teaching Jr. High right now. I LOVE working with the kids, HATE doing all the mountains of life or death paperwork that if you get wrong you might as well committ hari-kari, and I HATE dealing with some parents that can’t just accept that their child is not perfect and that I won’t be able to MAKE them perfect.

I love the children, the hours, and the environment. I teach the 5th grade. I dont dislike my job, you have to really have the passion for it, I really like Art and eventually I will be helping the children in the Art class.
